Sure, there are many endurance sports that build a strong sense of camaraderie, but none compare to cycling. It is by far one of the most challenging sports I have ever done both physically and mentally! Because of these challenges, emotions can take somewhat of a roller-coaster ride, and it is comforting to know that you have the support of others who can relate to what you are going through.
This is absolutely what got me hooked to the sport of cycling! One thing everyone should know about this sport is that the strongest rider does not always win the race. I find this extremely fascinating! You could be the fittest, strongest rider, but make one bad judgment call and you completely throw the race away. This is what makes your nerves go crazy before a race! You never know what can happen; but the better you get at reading races, in addition to smart training, the better the outcomes are.
Just when you think you have the latest toys and gadgets, you realize you do not! There is always something new and exciting coming out in the cycling industry. I would actually describe it as “never-ending”. You pull up to the start line at the beginning of the season and realize that what you have is not the latest and greatest. Someone always has something better!
I used to be a triathlete and was always bothered by the fact that I only raced every 6 to 8 weeks. Maybe triathletes race more than that now, but all I know is that I really love the fact that I have the ability to race every, single week if I choose to. Living on the East Coast, I could race four times a week! I feel like the excitement of training for races never dies because there is always another great event coming up.
If you have ever watched a cycling race, you know exactly what I am talking about! It is so great to see each person representing their respective teams in their well thought out, kit designs with matching socks, shoes, helmets, and sometimes bikes. The wide array of colors in itself is enough reason to go watch a bunch of cyclists circle a city block more times than you would ever want to!
