When it comes to daily fitness routines & lifestyle goals, one of the biggest lessons that I have learned is to be true to yourself. So often I see people comparing themselves to others instead of looking to them for inspiration.
One of my friends who is about one year into her fitness journey, recently just said to me, "you can't compare your chapter 2 to someone else's chapter 20." Her point being that if you walk into a gym or go the starting line of a race and start to look around and think, "well that person looks way better than I do." or, "that person looks like they've been running way longer than I have" you are basically setting yourself up to be upset.
It's so hard for me, as a personal trainer, to see the comparison trap. We were put on this earth to be ourselves & the more we try to be like others - we lose our own light.
To find your inner light & let it shine - you've got to find something to do that makes you happy. Maybe it's dancing, running, biking, or weight lifting - whatever it may be, pick the activity that makes you excited to do it.
Before you know it, this love of that activity may lead you to other activities and new friendships.
Instead of getting in your own way of starting a new routine - challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone and let your light shine.
A huge lesson that I learned with fitness was to never say no before you try.
There are so many options out there to be active and I found that the ones that I thought I wouldn't like as much were the ones that I ended up loving.
For example, I remember the years before I got into weight lifting, I used to think that weights were just for guys. I used to run right by the weights and get on an elliptical for an hour & I wondered why I was getting bored with my same routine day in and day out.
I finally challenged myself to walk over to the weights with a friend of mine & start a program. I ended up falling in love with everything about weights & not only did I become stronger, but I had more confidence to know that I could do more than I thought I could.
To really step out & try something new isn't always easy or comfortable, but in the end you will be glad you learned from the experience.
In the end, the most important part is to stay true to yourself. Don’t worry about what others are doing. Look inside of yourself to find what makes your own light shine & follow that!
