Unless you've been hiding under a rock somewhere the past 26 years, I'm sure you've heard of Burning Man. You know, the
once-a-year festivities out in Nevada's Black Rock Desert where over 40,000 people (Burners) come to
create Black Rock City,
overnight. It’s a
week-long celebration of community, art and self expression. This year, the
city will house over 60,000 people!
What you may not have heard much about is Playa
Foot – a malady caused by the harsh alkali sand and dust of Black Rock. Many
Burners afflicted with it have compared it to a chemical burn. Not as serious,
but just as uncomfortable. Because of
this, it’s important to wash off the dust from your feet before crawling into
your sleeping bag. We also suggest washing it off from all
other exposed areas and moist crevices – like between your
toes, armpits and legs.
There are several ways to wash the dust off – some Burners
recommend soaking your feet in a basin of water that has been treated with a
small amount of vinegar or lemon juice. But because water is such a precious resource in the desert, we
recommend… wait for it…. Action Wipes!
Unlike baby wipes, Action Wipes will not dry out your skin or leave
it irritated after a week of harsh chemicals and conditions. The coconut oil base will glently cleanse and soothe dry, irritated skin. The pure essential oils of frankincense, eucalyptus, tea tree and ylang ylang will help stimulate circulation and help heal any dry patches or cracked skin. Because it
is so dusty on the playa, we recommend 2 or 3 Action Wipes to get everything
But please - do not throw in the porta potties! Remember, you can repurpose Action Wipes, so they don't have to be dispossed of at the playa. You can bring them home, wash them and use them as part of next year's playa wear.
If you plan on going to Back Rock this year – make sure to get
everything you need before you go. Because once you’re there, there are no
stores! To that end, make sure to check out Prepare for the Playa Street
Festival where you can find just about everything you need for the Burn and more. We'll be there with show specials! So come out this Sunday, August 5, from 12pm-7pm, at Café Cocomo in San Francisco.!
