They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So when two related fire industry publications use our data to talk about a serious issue, we realize our work is being referenced, which helps us realize how important transparency really is. "Why Firefighters Should Decon with Towelettes" is the title of an article published by fire industry sister publications FireRescue 1 and Fire Chief. The issue is very real. According to the latest fact sheet (pdf) from NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health):
Based on U.S. cancer rates:
- Firefighters in our study had a greater number of cancer diagnoses and cancer-related deaths.
- There were about twice as many fire fighters with malignant mesothelioma, a rare type of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.
- There were more cases of certain cancers among younger fire fighters.
- Fire fighters in our study who were under 65 years of age had more bladder and prostate cancers than expected.
These are stunning and sobering statistics and one of the many reasons why we are continuing to focus on the testing of Action Wipes on the fireground and incorporating feedback from the thousands of firefighters across the US and Canada who use Action Wipes as their preferred firefighter wipe of choice for on-the-scene decon.
While there are dozens if not hundreds of wipes on the market, the articles listed the 16 specific wipes which we have published in our well-known wipe comparison page. Unlike other first responder wipe companies that have appeared on the market to take advantage of this need, Life Elements has been producing body wipes in the USA since 2006. From the start, we have been advocates of safe and pure ingredients, transparency on our manufacturing practices and complete ingredients list.
Another reference used in the Fire Chief and FireRescue 1 articles is the Environmental Working Group and their Skin Deep Database. We are very proud that Action Wipes are the only First Responder Body Wipe that has been awarded EWG VERIFIED status.
Action Wipes is a registered trademark of Life Elements, Inc. EWG VERIFIED and SKIN DEEP DATABASE are registered trademarks of Environmental Working Group.
